Public
Speaking Gets Your Name Known
Doing public speaking, you promote and conduct your hypnosis business and
help the community. When the community knows you are here to support it,
they will gladly come to you when they need your unique products and services.
But you must tell people you are in business! Public speaking gets your
name out there.
Many places will actually provide a facility for you to conduct your seminar at little or no cost to you. These facilities will actually promote your business paying for all or almost all marketing costs using their own money. These places include county park and recreation departments, vocational-technical schools, junior colleges, and other facilities that already offer community education classes. Other businesses looking for you to conduct your hypnosis-based groups seminar include health clubs, conventions, conferences, associations, organizations, clubs, and several other ones.
Opportunities abound for you to share your talents conducting hypnosis seminars. However, public speaking remains the number one fear among humans. Feeling fear or worry about public speaking is actually a mental habit of listening and believing self-limiting opinions of the hypercritical mind.
If you hesitate to speak publicly, you may be denying yourself income streams. Have you ever spoken at a convention or conference? If so, you know the convention or conference speakers are the entertainment.
Warren Buffett, a very smart businessman, said in one of his books that people act more willing to pay for entertainment than education any day. This is a billionaire. He knows what he's talking about. So if you're hesitating to do public speaking, is the public speaking fear what's causing you to deny yourself of sharing hypnosis in a group seminar setting?
Did you accidentally develop the habit of telling yourself to accept that you can only live your life according to self-limiting thoughts? If so, perhaps you feel frightened or worried to publicly speak. We are actually designed to feel comfortable expressing our opinions. So if you feel worried or fearful about speaking publicly that's a learned habit. And of course we can unlearn that habit using hypnosis.
If you’ve conditioned yourself to fear public speaking or fear achieving, it’s just an indication you can change that way of thinking. It’s a brain thing!
In the brain part that makes possible the hypercritical mind to express itself, you may hear phrases like, “No one likes hypnosis. They say it doesn’t work. They say its bunk. Why don’t you just stop trying to pretend you can successfully run a hypnosis business? Give up now before you make a big fool of yourself.” If you believe self-limiting types of phrases like these, you condition yourself to believe the opinions of the left brain. Essentially it is saying, “I dislike when you want to do people-oriented activities. So stop thinking those types of thoughts. When I have to listen to that way of thinking, its like fingernails on a blackboard! Stop that racket!”
Physiologically, The left brain easily dominates the right brain. In the left brain we find the language center. When we conduct hypnosis seminars or do hypnosis activities with clients, we use mainly the right brain. The left brain focuses on efficiently and accurately doing tasks. According to the way it is structurally designed, it must think in narrow and close-minded ways.
However, just because you can hear the left brain complaining that it must consider other types of ideas is no reason for you to believe it's structural preference for thinking only ideas it prefers to hear.
Each individual (and brain quadrant) is free to think any thought he or she (or it) desires to think. So when we think in uninhibited, expansive, right brain ways, there is actually nothing wrong with us thinking that way.
Each situation needs specific types of thoughts. We think thoughts, then we act out those thoughts using the physical body.
Imagine that the brain is a great script writer. Each moment that you live life you are constantly making up your life. We constantly do different things throughout our day. We desire different results of our actions throughout the day. Because each brain hemisphere thinks different thoughts, we need both left brain, task-oriented types of thoughts, and right brain, people-oriented types of thoughts for each life situation.
When you fear or worry about expressing your uninhibited and expansive opinions, that fear or worry reaction is the left brain’s way of telling you it feels out of control or threatened. When the left brain feels uncomfortable as you express open-minded ideas, you may hear insults or excessive criticism about your behavior. When the left brain starts to say insulting, demanding, criticizing concepts, it is reacting instead of cooperatively responding to the right-brained, people-oriented types of thoughts being thought by the right brain.
To work with this battle between the left and the right hemisphere, think about the two hemispheres like they’re sibling rivalries. One example of this is when you feel frightened or worried to express your opinions publicly. This may result in feeling fear about achieving. However, you can work with this interesting phenomenon.
When you hear an internal bullying or critical voice, via words of insults, guilt, blame, shame, manipulation or general criticism, recognize these words as conscious left-brain strategies to feel a sense of control. The left brain thinks that way preferring for the right brain to submit to it.
A bully in the schoolyard tries to take advantage of somebody weaker than him or her. If the weaker acting one believes he or she must give in to the bully, the weaker one submits. In submission, the weaker one feels miserable and unfulfilled. The only way the weaker one finally feels a sense of self is when he or she stands up to the bully.
When you hear the left brain discourage you from speaking publicly, you can talk to it using an assertive attitude. Remember it is only a brain hemisphere rather than some person who could hurt you or physically stop you from doing hypnosis seminars. And if you set yourself up to submit to the verbal disrespect of a domineering type, it's learned behavior.
So instead of continuing to bully yourself into living in self limiting ways, imagine responding (instead of fearfully reacting) to the bully. The assertive response dialog scene would go something like this, "So I heard you tell me the story that nobody likes hypnosis. And I also heard you tell me the story that I'm making a fool of myself by sharing what I know about hypnosis. Would you please tell me a different story a supportive story? Otherwise please be quiet."
And when you hear the hypercritical mind insist that you must live by its limits, start asking questions. The hypercritical mind which is most closely associated with the upper left brain is actually structurally designed to answer questions. So if you ask it questions about finding the cause of your fear of achieving, it will actually process what you're telling it.
For example, if you hear yourself think, "If I speak in public I'll look foolish." Understand that this is the left brain attempting to dominate the right brain. There's actually no reason for you to feel worried or frightened about expressing your true feelings. Think of a business consultant. Commonly, business consultants are expressing their opinions. They are paid to express their opinion. So there's no reason for you to feel frightened or worried as you’re expressing an opinion that differs from the way the left brain thinks.
The left brain is ALWAYS focused on efficiently and accurately getting a task done. The right brain ALWAYS focuses on appreciating and approving of people instead of making work the priority of every minute. The key to feeling calm about expressing your unique views in public is to:
Recognize that typically, that insult, guilt, shame, blame, criticism language patter is a left brain thing. It will get over it when you talk to it and say, “Yes, I heard that you’re focus is on getting the task done in a scientific, logical way. However, right now I am doing a right brain activity. Say something that improves the situation.” The more you insist on doing things that “improve the situation”, the sooner you’ll actually start physically changing the folds in the brain so the left brain starts to act more flexible to the right brain’s way of doing things.
Imagine a bully standing behind a 10 foot thick bullet-proof glass wall. The only thing the bully can do is talk. It's a voice like the voice on a radio you hear. The voice is unattached to a different physical being from your own that can actually come and physically stop you from conducting group hypnosis seminars. Now imagine you are on the other side of the wall. The bully is physically unable to come and do anything to you. It is unable to interfere in any way with your succeeding in your hypnosis business. It can only request boldly (and maybe loudly) that you think like it.
Hear the bully saying all kinds of foul things. See him jumping up and down, throwing a royal temper tantrum. Just because someone throws a temper tantrum that’s no reason to give in to it!
Close your eyes for a minute and see what is actually happening. What is actually happening is you are retraining your brain. Remember that you can always do EFT. If you've never done EFT, go to www.carollook.com. Look at Carol's Emotional Freedom Technique page and start to use EFT.
