Through a Web Site
The Internet has brought an explosion of opportunity for everyone that
has a connection.
A lot of money can be made through a web site but having a web site doesn't necessarily mean you will make money with it.
Let's go through the basics of web sites. There are three components of a web site that will cost you money:
1. Domain Name
2. Hosting
3. Design and development of your web site
Domain names used to be fairly expensive ($50+) per year. But in recent years they can be had for as little as $9.00 per year.
Your domain name is the address of your web site, the www.mywebsite.com part. Like the address of your house.
Your domain name can serve as a help or a hinderence when it comes to your online identity.
Imagine having a web site domain name like www.hypnosis.com! What do you think that would do for your online identity?
Now imagine a website with the domain name www.thisismybigfathypnosiswebsite.com. As you can see you want to choose a domain name that is concise and yet descriptive. But don't get too wordy. Save your words for the website itself.
By the way the technical function of the domain is to point the Internet to the servers where your web site physically resides. That's called the Host.
If a domain name is like the address of your house then website hosting is like your physical house.
Just like house there are many options in the hosting world. Just like with a house you need to decide if you need three bedrooms or four. With web site hosting you need to decide if you need 100 mb of storage or 30 gb of storage.
Hosting can range from free (not recommended) to several hundred dollars PER MONTH. Unlike buying a house with hosting you are renting space. So this charge does not go away.
So why is free hosting not recommended? I have found that in this life nothing is really free. With "free" hosting you have to allow the host to put banners on your web site. You have no control over the content of the banners. A very big reason not to use a free host is that the search engines tend to shy away from them, not ranking web sites that reside on free hosts.
So what's the range to spend on hosting for a new site? I would say between $10-20 per month.
For that you should get a good amount of space: 100-500mb. Enough bandwidth to keep your site going for the whole month. In the beginning you won't use a lot of bandwidth but you need to think about growth. So go for between 3 and 5 GB.
Do you need a database, .net, ASP, PHP? If so, you better make sure it's available on the host you choose. Or you could leave it up to your web site designer/developer.
"I'm not going to PAY someone to design my web site. My nephew just learned all about HTML in school." While this might actually work for some people more often than not it doesn't. Kids have other priorities as do friends and friends of friends.
When was the last time you got your friend to change the oil in your car or paint your living room? Same thing with web sites. If you want to save money do it yourself and experience the hours you have to work at getting something to display on the page just right. It isn't easy and for the most part it isn't fun.
However, it also doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.
I have found a web site designer/developer that will work with you to produce a really nice looking web site that is search engine friendly.
His name is David Canham and his company is DLConcepts.com.
Give him a call and he will give you a free estimate.
Please tell him "Susan Fox sent me."
